I was always fascinated with baking since I was a young child. I used to love greasing and flouring a baking tray before making cookies. That way nothing would stick. Then someone invented parchment baking paper, and I have been using baking paper for years. Since I bake a lot, I go though roll after roll of it. But I won't need to buy anymore to line my baking trays. Silicone baking mats have taken care of that.Let me start with the look of the product. You get 2 mats, with a woven look. They look great. They are semi transparent, with a coloured border. One mat has a blue border and one has red. I have a kitchen full of red appliances, but both look very smart. But you can see from the pictures, I'm sure. What more can I tell you? They are a US half sheet size - whatever that is. I've measured them, they are about 16 1/2 inches by about 11 5/8. Or in metric, 420 by 295 mm. So, they fit on my big baking sheets and give me plenty of room for cookies. But how are they for cooking? I did two test bakes with things I knew, buttery sugar cookies and sourdough bagels. The cookies turned out a treat, cooking in a moderate oven, the silicone sheets released my cookies with ease. But I usually get that from baking paper anyway. The bagels were a different matter, as they are more complex. I kneaded the dough on the mat, as it didn't stick. I let the shaped dough rise on the silicone mat. When it had risen I could easily lift the dough off the mat. I then placed the boiled bagel back on the mat and cooked them at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes. The silicone mat handled the heat and released the baked bagel with no problem. Usually on baking paper they stick, I was impressed. So, I have tried 2 very different baking experiences. Bread baking and cookie making. The mats washed up very well in warm soapy water, and look as good as new. I've rolled them up and stored them away, ready for my next baking adventure.Yes, I recommend these. They worked even better than I had expected.

I am extremely impressed with how well these work for cooking potatoes, carrots, zucchini, peppers, and the like on a baking sheet in the oven. The food tastes great and the cleanup is quick and easy. I find their heat rating to be more than adequate for what my needs are. I was nervous that they wouldn’t feel truly clean after washing but warm soapy water. a soft sponge, and a few minutes of air drying and the mat is like new. I have not noticed even a hint of any chemical odors or tastes so do believe that using these appropriately is important to prevent anything like that from happening which means using them atop a metal baking sheet and not on their own and not exposing them over or to direct flame, pretty common sense stuff. If you’re feeling like you have higher temperature range needs, then just give these a polite pass; I find it a bit interesting that so many reviewers are quibbling over a 50 degree difference since to me, 400 degrees is very hot so I wouldn’t even think if my needs were ever even within that range to use these. There are probably better options. But for most dinner time meal prep, these perform wonderfully. I love that I’m not adding any calories to my meals either by eliminating the need for a cooking spray (granted, I do use a zero calorie coconut oil spray anyway but I still always think less is more). There is another exception to a rule which is that this is also a great value as you get two mats for a very reasonable price (I something similar in a department store last week that was the same size but was only a single mat for $18.00). I just remembered that I even stuck some fish in with my veggie kabobs for a few minutes the other evening and the mat did not retain any fishy odor and this was after I failed to clean up the dishes that night and left them in the sink until the next late afternoon. My fiancé and I are usually better about getting to cleanup in a timely manner but we’re human so it’s reassuring to know that these are durable enough to take a little neglect as well. If you’re on the fence about whether or not you need these, you do. I admit that I also did not really have any expectations regarding the performance which may be why I view these absolutely not a sticky mess left mats so positively.

I have half-sheet pan-sized silicone matts of another brand I like, but I really wanted quarter-sheet size for my toaster oven and smaller pans. These were a great value with 3 for under $10. I was concerned when I saw some reviewers post pics with smudged borders. Still, I'm tired of throwing away foil and parchment paper! I'm glad I got these--no smudging, easy clean up, and no sticking food. I have not used them over 400 degrees F or on the convection setting of my oven, so maybe that's why. I do wish I could use them on higher heat, but that's my only issue with them. Good product for what it is!

Buying Guide

Silicone Baking Pads allow bakers to never have to purchase non-stick cooking oils or sprays and parchment paper again. When you’ve made the decision to purchase silicone baking pads you’ll first want to find a brand that is made from food-grade silicone that will be 100% safe to use while cooking. You’ll also want to double check that this food-grade silicone is oven-safe and can withstand the up to 400 degree temperatures required in order to bake or cook your favorite foods. Now that you've found a brand that passes all the safety aspects, you’ll want to consider what foods you’ll be using the baking pads for and what size pad would work best for those recipes. Some silicone baking pads come in a half size sheet that would work best for smaller foods such as muffins or cupcakes. Other silicone baking pads come in full size sheets that are better fit for larger foods such as cakes and cookies. When it comes to purchasing the perfect silicone baking pad size isn’t the only variable to consider because thickness is also a very important part of your decision making. The thicker the mat, the more insulation it will provide. Therefore, if you’re baking items that require a lot of heat such as pies or pizzas, you’ll definitely want to opt for a thicker mat. If you’re mostly baking smaller items that don’t need much heat then a smaller mat will fit the bill. With size and thickness out the way you can now decide on whether or not you want your baking pads to have raised edges. Raised edges can help keep your baked goods from spilling into your oven but they are a personal preference because they also can make it difficult to get some items out of the pan. Many silicone baking pads come in fun designs and colors. Now that you've gotten the logistics figured out you can also take the time to consider what color may go best with your kitchen’s decor or simply choose the color you like the most. Silicone Baking Mats can be used upwards of 3,000 times and saves you (and the planet) from having to use parchment paper.
