We brought this on our trip to Florida. Searching for seashells, sharks teeth and sand crabs was so much easier with this product.My children were less fearful of digging in the sand since the canister captures the sand and the holes easily allow for water to rinse away the sand. The lightweight material makes it easy for younger children to use. Highly recommended adding it to your beach bag!

Wonderfully sturdy sifter scoop is great for digging up treasures in sand or loose dirt. I really like that it was sturdy polycarbonate rather than metal as I could stick my pinpointer right in the scoop to check for metal coins, rings etc. without worrying about the scoop setting the detector off. Other metal scoops require you to dump the contents out on the ground to pinpoint for targets. The trowel is also strong but light enough to be an easy addition to your pack.

Price is great, I should have ready the description more closely as I thought the scoop would be metal. Note that this set is plastic. It seems sturdy and will hold up for searching the sand at the beach for lost treasure.

Like the Design, but could be a little light duty for serious use. Needs a better designed handle, too much stress on the single attachment when sand is wet.

My soon to be 11-year-old has always been interested in metal detectors. One of his hobbies with his best friend is doing yard and road clean up (I know!!!) and picking up all sorts of interesting bits (and of course, trash, too). We live near an aluminum plant, so there is always bits of metal just laying on the side of the road.He was super excited to open this up. He saw it was here after school and immediately put it together and went out into the yard to find things. He did need a little bit of help putting it together (he didn't know how to get the poles together and how to properly adjust them). He practiced on the way out of the house on the fridge, washer, dryer, etc. to know how it works.This is very easy to use - it has an on/off knob that controls the volume. There is nothing to change the sensitivity... no screen... just on/off + volume knob.Our yard was beeping a lot. He couldn't always find the object that was making it go off, but he always found something when he dug around (one thing was a huge piece of glass which definitely shouldn't have made it go off...) He said he did dig down a few inches, but I didn't go out to verify.He plans to take it with us to the beach. Hopefully he gets some good finds!

 We have a pair of curious boys, 7 and 3 years old. They always needed novel toys and challenges to play with. I got this for them to discover things near the house.Assembly was very easy, and just add a 9V battery (same as those used in smoke detectors), and the device is ready to run.It is not just a toy when used as the metal detector. The boy tried it in our front yard, and he did survey some areas and found two pieces of metal under the dirty and mushes.The volume of the beep could be adjusted, the detector could be turned on and off of course, all from turning the same blue knob.Now the boys would like to take it to beach to discover more values metals such as a toy car next time we go to Santa Cruz.

As soon as I assembled this device I ran outback and had a blast using the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Metal Detector as I hunted for hidden treasures and artifacts in my back yard woods.. Amazingly, I found my first mysterious piece of metal (pictured) which seems to be a strange metallic alloy that I suspect is wreckage from a crash-landed alien spacecraft. Once you find one cool thing, it's almost impossible to put the detector down for any reason... the hunt is on! I was sure I would find the buried hatch and entryway to the spacecraft that the metal piece came from but had to break for dinner. This detector can easily provide hours of fun and is a great entry level detector for those that might evolve more as a hobbyist / enthusiast / treasure hunter.I like the simplicity of the device in that it allows you to select several different modes that targets/filters for different types of metals. It has an easy to reach button on the handle that sets it in a targeting mode to help pinpoint the exact location of the buried object. The LCD is backlit and easy to read. I found the device to be lightweight and pretty easy to use, It takes one 9V battery which you will have to provide. I like that the battery holder has room to keep a back up replacement battery. It also comes with a spade to dig.I really like that this manufacturer has provided well written instructions that not includes information on assembly and operation, but theory, history, and other valuable insights into metal detection and treasure hunting.I may post a few more pictures of incredible treasures and artifacts .. unless of course I really discover an alien spacecraft relic in my back yard. In that case I may be treasure hunting on Mars.A great value !

I love the idea of the kids getting off the couch and out the door to explore the world around them. Who knows? I'd suggest keeping a few handy when "out in the field." I like that the base portion is waterproof, too.My photo shows me demonstrating it. It's lightweight and a child will find it easy to hold. The pole can be adjusted for different heights. Operation is easy. The digital display is clear and simple to read. The detector makes sounds as you'd expect when it gets near certain metals.I think most kids would get hours of enjoyment out of this, especially when they have some successes. You could tie in educational angles, and use this as part of a home-schooling course, such as science class and the Periodic table, or history (finding old coins or metal buttons, for example). Now both my sons and my husband have metal detectors. This one is perfect for my 9 year old son. I love all things National Geographic and this one is great too. It came with easy explainable directions. It is actually a very detailed detector in my opinion. Its function all work so far. It can detect which type of metal, how deep it is and it has a pinpointing feature so there is not much room for error when diffing. It even came with a small shovel. I love this. He plays with it often. I now have divits all over the yard, lol.

My daughter and I like to study minerals, we like to find treasures together. She's been able to find coins and other fun finds. This is a great gift and a wonderful way to discover the world. Worth the price to see a face light up.
