But for a few safety warnings cluttering up the handle, this is identical to the hammer handed down to me by my grandfather--and there's a good chance I'm old enough to be your grandfather. The handle has been replaced once on my grandfather's sledge, the faces have been filed a few times, but it remains as serviceable today as the day it was manufactured. So I didn't need this new tool, I just wanted it to support an American company making tools in America with materials and workers from America of the kind and with the quality of those which built this country. Is it perfect?--of course not, but in terms of function, it comes pretty darn close. There is a reason why generations of tools have been prized for their Hickory handles. It is easy to select straight grain, contributing to the wood's inherent strength. Its easy to mill to shape, with a surface that is smooth but retains enough fine texture to afford a good grip (of course the modern version has to have a synthetic finish applied over it--traditionalists are free to sand it off and apply a wax or oil). Hickory is known for being able to dampen the shock and vibration of hard blows, yet be rigid enough to transmit full force. This handle has a good shape, oval enough to prevent rotation and add comfort to the grip. It is straight but tapers a bit towards the head, allowing one to find the best point of balance as well as being able to choke up on it for lighter blows with greater control. It's a functional handle born from decades of lessons learned from tools put to regular use.The 2 pound head is a single steel casting, broken only by the through hole for the handle. The casting lines remain visible, but otherwise it is pretty clean. It is covered in a blue (presumably) enamel, that, if you should care about such things, can be easily touched up. It is a bit deeper, richer blue than the trademark Record blue that adorned that venerable British manufacturer's vices and other metal tools. The faces have the small variances indicative of a hand ground tool. The blockish head is tapered down to a round, fairly flat face--that act does not achieve a perfect symmetry, but it comes close. Both the tapers and face show the striations left by the abrasive, which is just fine for the work this tool will be put to. On mine one face is parallel to the handle, the other face angles very slightly toward the handle. I'm not sure if this is an intentional feature, or results from the inconsistency of the hand grinding--I suspect the latter, but regardless, it does nothing to diminish its function.I have sledges with 2, 3, 5, 10 and 12 pound heads. I find I use the 2 and the 10 the most--each for different purposes. Frankly, 2 pounds is about all I am (or ever was) really capable of controlling over any extended period of time. You are moving into two handed territory to maintain control with anything more.So I now have this great hammer. It makes me happy just to look at it, and consider its predecessors as well as the hands who manufactured them. So it will be a useful tool, just as the one from my grandfather so often has been, but as you know from reading this far, I will appreciate it for far more than just it's utility.

Fantastic build quality hammer, this is well balanced so I feel like I have more control with less effort with each swing. I am not the most coordinated woman, so I am not very comfortable with most tools. This hammer really makes me feel much more confident and I really enjoy using this. I have found that the handle really makes a difference, the length and shaping can have a lot of power over how well I can grip the handle to get control of each swing. The handle is nice and smooth, but it isn't slippery, so I am able to get a solid grip on this easily. Depending on what I am using this for change the grip, so I can hold it closer to the top for the light swings near my fingers, or towards the back for breaking down furniture. I think that this is one of the best hammers I have ever used. I have found myself looking around to see what else I can use this on.The head itself is amazing, the metal is solid and heavy with a really durable feel. There is not any wobbling that makes me feel like it is going to come off, and I have no concerns that I am going to damage it when I really give it a good swing. This has been amazing for breaking down furniture pieces, flattening out jewelry metal, and to be honest, pounding chicken filets to stuff. The weight is easy to control with my movements so I am not afraid of hitting my hand or going too hard with this. If it was much heavier I wouldn't have the same confidence. I don't have to swing with all of my strength to really feel the impact, this is so much easier for me to use than the everyday hammer that I use for hanging pictures. I use this so much more often than I ever thought I would, and this is really built to last, so I believe that this is something that my grandchildren will learn with as well. There are not many tools made these days that I feel have that sort of craftsmanship, but this hammer is absolutely solid and a great sludge for a beginner to an expert.

I use these style hammers all the time, on the job doing carpentry or at home driving stakes and fence posts in the garden. This is a well made, well balanced tool. I couldn’t believe they are made in the USA too! Great buy

It obviously was not strong enough to hold a large tool. Amazon reshipped it in a box with proper padding the second time around.
